Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that uses the lining of the abdomen, or peritoneum, to filter blood inside the body. A surgeon places a soft tube called a catheter into the belly to allow a cleansing fluid, or dialysate, to be introduced into the abdomen. Waste and extra fluid are pulled from the blood vessels into the dialysate, and then the used fluid is drained out of the body through the catheter.

There are two types of peritoneal dialysis:
